MES Kindergarten Robotics & Literacy Family Night
Hailey Sebahar

Mrs. Hukkanen’s kindergarten class and their families took part in a hands-on literacy and coding experience inspired by If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.

After reading the story together, students used cookie cards placed on the VEX Robotics coding boards to recreate the story’s cause-and-effect sequence. Each child chose where to place their cookie card and then coded their robot to act out what happens next in the story, just like “If you give a mouse a cookie…”.

The Dessert Research Institute brought their team to help facilitate the even. Parents and students coded side-by-side, working together to program their robots and experimenting to see if they could get multiple robots to perform the same actions at the same time.

Every family left the event with a copy of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie to continue the learning at home. In addition, MES classrooms will keep the VEX robots along with five additional children’s books, each paired with lessons that connect literacy, sequencing, and introductory coding skills.

The event blended reading, problem-solving, and technology in a way that engaged both students and families, reinforcing learning through play and collaboration.
